Restaurant Makasi brings a slice of Central African flavor to Gatineau with a focus on full-service dining that leans into the region’s vibrant culinary traditions. Situated on Promenade du Portage, this spacious, modern spot welcomes those looking for hearty, shareable meals infused with rich, authentic spices and home-style cooking.

The atmosphere captures a lively yet comfortable vibe, with Congolese music setting a warm, familiar tone that often reminds visitors of Kinshasa’s bustling restaurants, but with cleaner lines and updated decor. It’s the kind of place where groups gather easily, making it well suited for family dinners or meetups with friends who want to explore African cuisine beyond the usual takeout options.

The menu highlights a variety of dishes emphasizing grilled meats and fish, with African chicken options standing out, especially the poulet mayonnaise, praised locally for its balance of flavor and tenderness. While the grilled goat and catfish both earn high marks for freshness and seasoning, those looking for tilapia might want to call ahead as availability can vary. Sweet or savory beignets—African-style donuts—offer a distinctive finish to the meal and reflect the blend of traditions on the menu.

Visitors tend to appreciate the generous portion sizes and the reasonable prices, which match well with the spirited, community-focused feel of the restaurant. Parking nearby adds a practical bonus for those arriving by car, and the friendly, attentive service helps keep the experience relaxed even when the place fills up.

This spot is best for those curious about African cuisine who appreciate a sit-down meal with a festive and eclectic soundtrack. Early evenings on weekends or any time during a gathering with a bigger party are ideal moments to enjoy the rhythms, tastes, and atmosphere that Makasi cultivates—offering a local taste of Central African culture framed by Gatineau’s neighborhood energy.

I went there last week and the food was banging!!!!! I would go back to gatineau just for their food. We were 7 and tried to order lots of stuff so we can try, grilled goat was really good, we ordered grilled tilapia but they didn’t have it that’s why I gave 4 stars. We ended up getting the grilled catfish that was the best catfish ever, the taste was amazing. We also got poulet mayo, grilled chicken, fumbwa, plantains, everything was very good. It is worth it. Only con is that service could have been a little better, waitress was really good but it took a while for drinks to come, and we order another order of goat meat and kwanga that took forever to come other than that everything was good. Kwanga is on the small side for the price. Last thing if y’all will have pictures of all the congolese presidents then put all of them then Love the food though

Great portions and everything tasty, nicely served and reasonable price. Excellent service. It’s a large, modern restaurant with parking close by. I enjoyed the Congolese music and added some songs to my music app.

This place always reminds of the restaurant/bars in Kinshasa but with a better design. The food is good, they have the best Poulet Mayo in Ottawa-Gatineau. I wish they had more Congolese drinks.

I visited Makasi earlier this year for my birthday. We had great service and the food was delicious. The plantain and goat were very fresh and the beignet delicious. I hope moving forward everyone can have a positive experience like I did and support this local business. It makes me sad to see how many bad reviews they are receiving.
